Italy is a country located in Southern Europe comprised of the boot-shaped Italian peninsula and a number of islands including Sicily and Sardinia. Neighboring countries include Austria, France, Holy See, San Marino, Slovenia, and Switzerland. Italy has
a strategic location dominating central Mediterranean as well as southern sea and air approaches to Western Europe. The government system is a republic. The chief of state is the President and the head of government is the Prime Minister. Italy has a diversified
industrial economy, which is divided into a developed industrial north, dominated by private companies, and a less-developed, welfare-dependent, agricultural south. Italy is a member of the European Union (EU).
Italy, slightly larger than Arizona, is a long peninsula shaped like a boot, surrounded on the west by the Tyrrhenian Sea and on the east by the Adriatic. It is bounded by France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia to the north. The Apennine Mountains form
the peninsula’s backbone; the Alps form its northern boundary. The largest of its many northern lakes is Garda (143 sq mi; 370 sq km); the Po, its principal river, flows from the Alps on Italy’s western border and crosses the Lombard plain to the Adriatic
Sea. Several islands form part of Italy; the largest are Sicily (9,926 sq mi; 25,708 sq km) and Sardinia (9,301 sq mi; 24,090 sq km).
Italian culture has a rich history that includes art, classic architecture, popular traditions, and customs. Includes links to trends in Italy today as well as resources on folklore, history, and artistic traditions.
Experience amazing travel in Italy – take a step back in time while you walk the streets of Rome, relive the atmosphere of the mighty Colosseum, behold (not literally!) the statue of David or the gothic Duomo in Florence, cruise the canals of Venice in a
gondola or climb the leaning tower of Pisa. Fill yourself to the brim with art and history and then soak up the sun on the Amalfi coast (or another patch of the 5,275 miles of coastline). Or for all you snow-bunnies, why not head to the Italian Alps during
the Italian ski season.
