About:
Romania is a country located at the crossroads of Central and Southeastern Europe. It has a coastline on the Black Sea and borders Bulgaria, Hungary, Moldova, Serbia, and Ukraine. Romania has mountain ranges running from north and west in the interior, which
are collectively known as the Carpathians. The government system is a republic. The chief of state is the President and the head of government is the Prime Minister. Romania has a mixed economy in which the economy includes a variety of private freedom, combined
with centralized economic planning and government regulation. Romania is a member of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC).
Romania’s population is remarkably homogenous. Almost 90 percent are ethnic Romanians, claiming descent from Latin-speaking Romans who settled among the local Dacians in 100-200 A.D. As a result, Roman-ian is a Romance language related to French and Italian,
in contrast to the Slav languages spoken in surrounding countries. Around 70 percent of Romania’s population is Romanian Orthodox.
Romania is in southeast Europe and is slightly smaller than Oregon. The Carpathian Mountains divide Romania’s upper half from north to south and connect near the center of the country with the Transylvanian Alps, running east and west. North and west of
these ranges lies the Transylvanian plateau, and to the south and east are the plains of Moldavia and Walachia. In its last 190 mi (306 km), the Danube River flows through Romania only. It enters the Black Sea in northern Dobruja, just south of the border
with Ukraine.
Romanian culture sets itself apart from other cultures in the East European region just as it shares some elements with them. Romania’s Dracula legend and its Dacian history are two examples of how Romania’s culture is unique. On the other hand, Romania’s
Easter egg traditions and its folk costumes bear some similarities with those of nearby countries.
