About:
Slovenia is a country in Central Europe bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Neighboring countries include Austria, Croatia, Hungary, and Italy. Despite its small size, Slovenia controls some of Europe’s major transit routes. The Alps dominate northern Slovenia
and numerous rivers lie in the east. The government system is a parliamentary republic. The chief of state is the President and the head of government is the Prime Minister. Slovenia has a mixed economic system in which the state is considerably involved in
centralized planning, but there is private sector freedom. Slovenia is a member of the European Union (EU).
Slovenia has a population of two million people. Similarly to other modern societies, the country has been facing demographic issues, such as ageing, and low birth rate. Slovenia’s population is slowly declining. Families used to be quite large, but have
been growing smaller over recent decades. Both birth and mortality rates have decreased, and there has been growing concern about lower birth rates. The year 1993 was the first to see a negative demographic trend.
Slovenia occupies an area about the size of the state of Massachusetts. It is largely a mountainous republic and almost half of the land is forested, with hilly plains spread across the central and eastern regions. Mount Triglav, the highest peak, rises
to 9,393 ft (2,864 m).
Slovenia may be the best-kept secret in Europe. Just half the size of Switzerland, the country is often treated as fly-over—or drive-through—territory by travelers heading to better-known places in Croatia or Italy. That’s good news for anyone choosing Slovenia
as a destination in its own right. It means fewer crowds—even in the peak summer touring months—fewer hassles, and in many ways a more authentic travel experience.
