The Philippines, officially known as the Republic of the Philippines, is a sovereign state in Southeast Asia in the western Pacific Ocean. To its north across the Luzon Strait lies Taiwan. West across the South China Sea sits Vietnam. The Sulu Sea to the southwest lies between the country and the island of Borneo, and to the south the Celebes Sea separates it from other islands of Indonesia. It is bounded on the east by the Philippine Sea. An archipelago comprising 7,107 islands, the Philippines is categorized broadly into three main geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Its capital city is Manila.

The Philippines is the third largest English speaking country in the world. It has a rich history combining Asian, European, and American influences. Filipinos are a freedom-loving people, having waged two peaceful, bloodless revolutions against what were perceived as corrupt regimes. The Philippines is a vibrant democracy, as evidenced by 12 English national newspapers, 7 national television stations, hundreds of cable TV stations, and 2,000 radio stations. Filipinos are a fun-loving people. Throughout the islands, there are fiestas celebrated every day and foreign guests are always welcome to their homes.

India’s Association:

  • The Ispat Group owns and operates Philippines’ largest plant with an investment of US$ 245 million.
  • Established in 1975, Indo-Phil Textiles, a joint venture of the Aditya Birla Group, is the largest textile mill in the Philippines and employs over 1500 people.
  • Lupin has acquired a 51 per cent stake in Multicare Pharmaceuticals Philippines, and produces formulations for a range of ailments. Other Indian pharma majors have also established a significant presence in the country.
  • Established in 1930 in Manila, The New India Assurance Ltd is rated as one of the top-20 non-life insurance companies in the Philippines.
  • India’s leading IT companies, including L&T Infotech, Infosys, Intelenet, Hinduja Global Solution and IBM Daksh have made substantive investments in the Philippines and employ 50,000 people.
  • The Philippines’ Ayala Group is partnering with the Mahindra Group to develop a residential community in Chennai. It also consulted with L&T during construction of the Howrah Road Bridge.

Philippines is a group of 7000 islands, and it is one of the largest democracies.

Spanish and Malay influences are evident in its culture and it is the only Christian country in South East Asia. The Indian community has always lived in complete cooperation with the Filipinos. The various examples of Indo-Filipino collaborations are the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) and Indophil. India is a member country in the AIM. Indophil is a textile spinning plant established by Aditya Birla, which is now the largest in South East Asia. APTECH, an Indian institution, provides computer education for the youth in Philippines. Filipinos trained in computers have made their mark in the IT sector.
