KALADAN PROJECT

1794. SHRI RAMEN DEKA:

Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:

(a) the details of steps taken/being taken by the Indian and Myanmar Governments to expedite the work of Kaladan Multi-modal project;

(b) whether any time bound programme has been chalked out to complete the project; and

(c) if so, the details thereof?

ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

(a) Both the Governments of India and Myanmar have been taking necessary steps to expedite the work of the Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport project. These steps include close supervision/monitoring of work by the project management consultants; regular review through multiple monitoring mechanisms, including review committee, bilateral working committee, etc.; facilitation of clearances, approvals and security by Myanmar authorities and coordination of implementation by Ministry of External Affairs and Indian Mission/Post.

(b) Yes. A time bound programme for completing different components of the Kaladan project has been chalked out.

(c) The port at Sittwe, Inland Water Transport (IWT) terminals at Sittwe and Paletwa, back-up facilities, navigational channel and all six self-propelled IWT vessels have already been completed. Work on road component has begun and is targeted to be finished in 3 years. Before that, certain additional waterway works are scheduled for completion by April 2019.
