Visit of Dr. Jan Peter Balkenende, Prime Minister of the Netherlands

The Prime Minister of The Netherlands, Dr. Jan Peter Balkenende will be visiting India from January 17-20, 2006. Besides holding official meetings in New Delhi on January 20, he will also be visiting Bangalore and Agra.

The Dutch Prime Minister, Dr. Balkenende will call on Rashtrapatiji. Prime Minister will hold delegation level talks with the visiting dignitary. Dr. Balkenende will also call on Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the National Advisory Council. The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Shri L. K. Advani will call on Dr. Balkenende.

In Delhi, besides his official meetings, Dr. Balkenende will have a series of engagements including an address to the Institute for European Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. In Bangalore, he will visit the Indian Institute of Science and will also hold a meeting with the academic and business community in Bangalore.

The Netherlands is the 4th largest foreign investor in India. Dutch multinationals have been active in India for decades. Bilateral trade is over US$ 2 billion.

Prime Minister had visited The Hague in November 2004 for the 5th India-EU Summit during the Dutch Presidency of the European Union when Prime Minister Balkenende was President of the Council of the European Union. The Summit, which launched the India-EU Strategic Partnership, was a milestone in India-EU relations.
