NALANDA UNIVERSITY

4750. SHRIMATI KAVITHA KALVAKUNTLA:

Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:

(a) whether the departments catering to various disciplines in Nalanda University have since become functional and if not, the reasons therefor;
(b) the number of foreign students enrolled/likely to be enrolled therein;

(c) the total foreign exchange likely to be earned therefrom; and

(d) the total amount spent towards the re-construction of the University, till date?

ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

(a) The Vice-Chancellor and other officials of Nalanda University started functioning from Rajgir in August 2014. Teaching in the School of Historical Studies and the School of Ecology and Environment Studies commenced in September 2014 from a temporary campus in Rajgir.

(b) There are currently 13 students, of whom two are foreign students; one each from Japan and Bhutan. The number is likely to go up in future.

(c) Nalanda University is a non-profit public-private partnership with significant contribution from the Government of India. Foreign governments and entities have made voluntary contributions. It is not obligatory for foreign students to pay the University in foreign exchange. The foreign exchange likely to be earned in future will depend on such contributions.
(d) An amount of Rs. 2727.10 crore has been approved by the Government for the establishment of Nalanda University, of which Rs. 47.28 crore has been released till date.
