Inauguration of Japanese Language Teachers’ Training Centre

  • A Japanese Language Teachers’ Training Centre being set up with Japanese collaboration was inaugurated on July 23, 2018 in New Delhi by Gen. (Dr.) V.K. Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs. The Centre will be temporarily located in the Human Resource Development Centre of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) until a permanent facility is created.
  • The inaugural ceremony was attended by JNU Vice Chancellor Prof. Jagadesh Kumar and other senior officials from the Indian side. From the Japanese side, Ambassador of Japan in India Mr. Kenji Hiramatsu, Executive Vice President of Japan Foundation, Mr. Tomoyuki Sakurai and other senior officials were present.
  • The Centre has been set up pursuant to the Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of Japanese Language Training in India signed between India and Japan during the visit of the Japanese Prime Minister to India on 14 September 2017. It aims at promoting Japanese language expertise in India with a view to further strengthening economic ties and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries. The Memorandum of Cooperation provides for establishing one Teachers’ Training Centre and 100 new Japanese language courses, including new Japanese language learning centres in the next 5 years.
  • In his remarks at the inaugural ceremony, Minister of State for External Affairs, Gen. (Dr.) V.K. Singh, highlighted the importance of India-Japan relations in India’s economic modernization and noted that it was a timely initiative to promote Japanese language education in India. Ambassador Hiramatsu expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by Indian and Japanese authorities, and noted the importance of this initiative for Japan in supporting the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
  • The activities at this Centre will be steered jointly by MEA and Embassy of Japan with the support of the Japan Foundation. First training programme is a 360 hours, 3-months programme with trainees coming from all over India. Minimum eligibility for trainees is N3 level of JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test). The trainees after their graduation will be issued certificates jointly by MEA and Embassy of Japan. Certificates will be issued by HRDC, JNU also for the courses that meet the UGC guidelines. Other training programmes at this Centre will include short-term programmes for in-service teachers also.
