437. SHRI NEERAJ SHEKHAR:
Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:

(a) whether Government’s effort to secure membership of Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) has failed, if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor; and

(b) whether Department of Atomic Energy was consulted before moving forward and starting open campaign for membership of NSG, if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
[GEN. (DR) V. K. SINGH (RETD)]

(a) The recent Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) Plenary meeting in Seoul (June 23-24, 2016) concluded without a decision on India’s membership. However, it is understood there was a very large measure of support for India during a discussion on membership. The broad sentiment within the NSG was to take this matter forward. The Government continues its engagement with the NSG Participating Governments on the issue of India’s membership of the NSG.

(b) Department of Atomic Energy has been actively associated with Government’s efforts on India’s membership of the NSG.
