ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
(SHRI KIRTI VARDHAN SINGH)
(a & b) As per law, Indian passports are issued to Indian citizens after confirming the passport applicant’s identity including name, address and citizenship, on the basis of identity and address proof documents submitted by the applicants as well as the police verification reports either before or after issuance of passports. Whenever cases of obtaining double/multiple passports are reported, appropriate actions including impounding/revoking of the passports are taken immediately as per the provisions of the Passports Act, 1967. There are stringent measures to detect individuals applying for more than one passport under the upgraded Passport Seva Project version 2.0.
(c) During the last five years, Passport Authorities in India and abroad have received 1343 complaints regarding double/multiple passports. In all such cases, actions such as impounding/revoking of the passports have been taken under the provisions of the Passports Act, 1967.
