Shri Rudrendra Tandon assumed charge as Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs on 11 May 2026.
Prior to this, Shri Tandon was India’s Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic from June 2023 to April 2026.
Shri Tandon joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1994.
He has done postings at the Indian Embassies in Paris (France), Algiers (Algeria), Kabul (Afghanistan) and Moscow (Russia) and served as India’s Consul General in Jalalabad (Afghanistan). He served as India’s Ambassador to ASEAN Secretariat from July 2018 to August 2020 and to Afghanistan from September 2020 to August 2021.
While posted in India, he has served as Under Secretary (Pakistan), Director in the Prime Minister’s Office, Director (Pakistan), JS (PAI), Joint Secretary (UNP) and Additional Secretary (BIMSTEC & SAARC) in the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi.
Shri Tandon has done a Master’s Degree in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics and is married to an Indian Police Service Officer.
